Venezuela's Maduro Cracks Down On American Visitors

(Refiled for wider distribution)

CARACAS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Saturday his government had captured American citizens involved in "espionage activities," and said U.S. citizens in the future will have to seek visas to come to the OPEC nation.

Speaking during a rally, he said his government will prohibit some U.S. officials from entering Venezuela in retaliation for a similar measure by the government of President Barack Obama against a group of Venezuelan public officials.

"We have captured some U.S. citizens in undercover activities, espionage, trying to win over people in towns along the Venezuelan coast," he said, adding a U.S. citizen of Latin descent was captured in the convulsed border city of Tachira.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Caracas said he was unable to comment, citing a lack of any official diplomatic communication with the Venezuelan government.

The head of a Venezuelan evangelical organization on Friday said a group of four missionaries had been called in for questioning after participating in a medical assistance campaign in the coastal town of Ocumare de la Costa.

That pastor, Abdy Pereira, on Saturday said in a telephone interview that the four had left the country for Aruba after having been questioned for several days about alleged involvement in espionage. Pereira said the group had been coming to Venezuela 14 years and denied they were involved in espionage.

The United States and Venezuela have had tense diplomatic relations for more than a decade. Maduro recently accused Washington of helping stage a coup, a charge dismissed by the White House as ludicrous. (Reporting by Diego Ore, writing by Brian Ellsworth; Editing by Bernard Orr)

What Nutrition Experts Eat On Vacation

If you're a healthy eater who practices portion control, you know a vacation can put a dent in your healthy lifestyle. Whether you're kicking back and relaxing for a week or getting to know a new city, counting calories doesn't exactly sound appealing when you're trying to have a great time.

So, how can you have a blast on vacation without packing on the pounds? We consulted a number of nutrition experts, and they let us know what they eat when they leave town -- and, truthfully, it sounds pretty awesome.

They eat dessert!

dessert

Think nutritionists are skimping on fun foods, even on vacation? Joy Bauer, nutritionist for "The Today Show," certainly isn't. "I generally go out of my way to eat as healthfully as possible when I'm away from home -- but I allow myself something fun and indulgent each day," she said. "I try to make it indigenous of the area, so it's special and memorable, like key lime pie in Florida, a piƱa colada when I'm in a tropical setting, or clam chowder in the northeast."

They don't skimp on produce.

fruits and vegetables

Regardless of anything else she's eating on vacation, Katherine Brooking, MS, RD, makes sure her diet is full of fruits of vegetables. "Even when vacationing, I don't skimp on produce. I just buy more pre-washed, ready-to-eat options like ... pre-cut fruit cups sold in most supermarkets," she said.

They eat one big a meal a day.

plate of food

Easing up on portion control on vacation isn't a bad idea at all -- just make sure every meal isn't a huge one. "I either have a big lunch or big dinner, not both, and will snack on a granola bar or nuts," Elisa Zied, MS, RDN, CDN, and author of Younger Next Week said. "I usually bring mixed nuts with us on vacation-cashews, pistachios, almonds, pecans."

They try healthy new things.

healthy food

Why not take advantage of being in a new place to get to know the local healthy cuisine? That's what Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., RDN, does. "Before I go, I ask around to find out about the best restaurants, local fare, farmers markets or fun places that give me a feel for the food in the area that I'm going to," she told HuffPost. "I always want to try local specialties. At the same time, I look for venues that give healthier options too such as salads, locally grown vegetables and fruits, or fish so that I continue to make smart choices and eat healthy and well for my body."

They make smart alcohol choices.

beer

It's no secret that a vacation spent sipping sugary drinks can tack on a lot of extra calories. So Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, and author of The Flexitarian Diet says she doesn't budge on her alcohol choice. "Instead of high-sugar topical drinks, I lean toward light beer with lime or club soda with a shot of fun-flavored vodka," she said.

They don't eat every meal out.

restaurant

Julie Upton, MS, RD, doesn't avoid restaurants on vacations, but she does only eat at them once a day. "Research consistently shows that the more you eat out, the harder it is to maintain a healthy weight. That means I make my own breakfast every day," she explained. "I find starting your day out right is really important to keep your overall diet on track. I will eat a bowl of instant oatmeal with Greek yogurt and fruit or some type of whole-grain, fiber-rich cereal with soy milk and fruit or Greek yogurt with fresh fruit. I like to pick up lunches at a salad bar or piece that meal together from yogurt, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, deli meat. These are items you can pretty much find anywhere so you can avoid eating lunch out."

Algeria From A Drone Might Be The Most Stunning Place We've Ever Seen

Algeria is a place of nearly unimaginable beauty and diversity. From the heights of the Tell Atlas mountains to the bleakly beautiful desert expanse of Tamanrasset Province, it offers truly unforgettable landscapes. The country that inspired the works of Camus, Algeria also reflects the beauty and complexity of an ancient civilization, mingled with the effects of more than 100 years of French occupation.

A new project, SkyCam Algeria, has set out to capture the country's diverse attractions in a set of incredible photographs taken from drones. Using a GoPro camera, SkyCam Algeria captured the snowy peaks, desert vistas and ancient edifices that make Algeria such a unique -- and irresistible -- place to visit.

Disneyland Surveillance Catches Ghost Hanging Around After Hours... Because Who Wouldn't?

Because who wouldn't want to spend their afterlife at the Happiest Place on Earth?

A 2009 YouTube video -- presumably of Disneyland surveillance footage -- shows a grim grinning ghost cruising around Diseyland's Haunted Mansion and Rivers of America areas after hours. The Park is totally empty, giving him plenty of space to roam around the sidewalks and grass. He even walks on water near the end of the tape.

You may have to look closely, but you can see something going on.

Reddit user _littlehelll resurfaced the video on Friday. Users speculate the apparition may be the result of re-using VHS surveillance tapes. Some say it's Walt Disney's ghost, and others don't know WHAT the heck is going on here.

One thing's for sure: This dude isn't paying admission.

Artist Challenges Selfie Stick Ban By Taking A Bunch Of Selfies

Museums all over the world are working to ban the beloved selfie stick, but Australian artist Jesse Willesee isn't having it.

As a conceptual artist, Willesee is all about the selfie stick, which attaches to cameras and makes it possible to take selfies from a distance greater than arm's length.

"Anything that helps you document the world is a positive thing," he told The Huffington Post. So Willesee "stormed" the Museum of Contemporary Art in Australia and took a bunch of selfie stick photos for a project titled "Andy Warhol With Better Features."

andy warhol with better features 1

Willesee shot the project in collaboration with photographer Valentina Penkova. His intent is to highlight the world's interest in selfies and the idea that we now use other people's art as the backdrop for our own.

“People were taking photos of Valentina taking photos of me while I was taking photos of myself,” Willesee said in a press release. “No one was looking at the art."

andy warhol with better features

Although museum staff reportedly told Willesee that his project would "detract from the others' viewing experience," he did it anyway.

"I went in anyway and shot without their permission. And for most of the people there at the time, I was the most interesting viewing experience they were having," he told HuffPost. "After I started posing with the artworks, people wanted to pose with me. Galleries don’t accept that that’s the kind of experience audiences want to have. They have an old-fashioned solemn, contemplative viewing experience in mind when people want to interact and jump into the picture. Let the people take photos!"

selfie stick 3

So, why Warhol? Willesee told HuffPost that Warhol would have been a fan of the selfie stick.

"It seems like something he could have invented himself. So the title is a play on words with his name and the line from Jay Z's 'Picasso Baby,' where he says 'sleeping every night next to Mona Lisa, the modern day version with better features.' The idea of him taking Beyonce and mythologizing her against the Mona Lisa reminded me of how people want to mythologize themselves with great artworks."

Forget The Kennel, Use Rover For Your Dogs When You Go On Vacation

Going on vacation is one of the most exciting things to look forward to, but if you're leaving a pet at home, it can turn into a stressful experience. Luckily, you won't have to worry about man's best friend at the kennel anymore, because Rover has you covered.

Rover (much like DogVacay) is the latest service to offer at-home dog boarding. It's a happy alternative to boarding your dog at kennel or burdening neighbors, friends and family with petsitting responsibilities.

The way Rover works is sort of like Airbnb. Dog owners browse the "search" section of the site or app for potential pet sitters, which can be organized by zip code and available dates. In-depth profiles of pet sitters are provided, complete with multiple reviews, availability, specific services and rates. Currently, Rover has over 25,000 approved sitters in more than 5,000 U.S. cities.

After deciding on someone that fits your doggie criteria, just direct message a pet sitter on their profile to schedule a meet and greet, decide if they'll watch Fido at your house or theirs and pay them.

Then, like Rover says, all that's left to do is relax! Rover pet sitters are encouraged to send text and picture updates throughout the day, and if there's a medical emergency, the site guarantees 24/7 access to a vet. Don't worry about a sitter canceling -- you're also guaranteed a replacement if someone falls through.

Happy doggie, happy travels -- that sounds good to us. To learn more about Rover, click here.

Hell Is For Sale, And These Damned Artists Would Really Like Your Help Buying It

For the group that puts on an art show called “DAMNED: An Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness,” an abandoned church seems like an appropriate venue. But hosting in 5 acres of Hell is even more fitting.

DAMNED, which stages an annual visual arts show, masquerade and performances in Detroit, is hell-bent on raising $1,333,666 to purchase the holdings of Hell, Michigan, where members plan to build a performing arts center. They launched a Kickstarter campaign this week to help get the funds.

damned

What to expect in DAMNED's version of Hell. Via Kickstarter.

The small town of Hell is a surprisingly popular destination (and excuse for puns) located 60 miles west of Detroit. Tourists can attend the annual Hearse Fest or Blessed in Hell motorcycle rally, marry in the Chapel of Love or get a “degree” from Damnation University (Damn U) -- or just take their pictures in front of the town sign to prove they visited the underworld.

John Colone, who owns the holdings of Hell and is the unofficial mayor, announced Feb. 13 (a Friday, of course), that he was selling the property for just under $1 million -- $999,666, to be exact.

Besides the 5-acre property, "university" and chapel, the Hell holdings include a souvenir store, an ice cream shop, a weather station, a post office, a mini golf course, the Gates of Hell and a canoe and kayak rental operation. Perhaps most lucratively, the merchandising rights to “Hell” and associated online pages for the town are also included in the listing.

The sale is being handled by real estate agent Rick Beaudin, who calls himself the “Pinckney Pirate”-- and he has the hat to prove it. (Who else would you trust to sell Hell?)

DAMNED member Anthony DVS told WXYZ the group had been searching for an abandoned church or warehouse in the Detroit area for their venue. But, as the Kickstarter page notes, they couldn't pass up this “divine opportunity.”

“So we ask you, the fine citizens of the world, to help us to unleash Hell 2.0 on Earth,” the Kickstarter page beckons. “There are no soul contracts to sign. No first-borns to give.”

Perks for top donations to the crowdfunding campaign include a chance to have your name "scribed ETERNALLY upon the walls of Hell 2.0" and a personalized parking spot in Hell.

Some might think an outsider arts group has a snowball’s chance in hell of raising more than a $1 million by March 22. But you never know; the crowdfunding campaign raised more than $40,000 in its first few days with little publicity. And last we heard, Hell already froze over.

Ethereal 'Slurpee' Waves Roll Onto Frigid Nantucket Beach

When Nantucket-based photographer and surfer Jonathan Nimerfroh went to the beach on a frigid 19-degree day last week, he saw something he’d never seen before: slushy, half-frozen waves rolling up to the shore.

“I could see the horizon off the water, and it looked really bizarre,” he told The Huffington Post. “I just couldn’t believe there was this slow-motion set of little waves moving in.”

Nimerfroh says he knew there would be waves of some sort, but thought that since the wind was blowing out, it would be "a total washing machine." Instead, he found perfect sets rolling in with waves 2-3 feet high (those photographed below, he said, were probably more like one-footers).

"Since it was so frozen, the waves were like these glassy Slurpee barrels. ... The whole shoreline, from the sand to 300 yards out in the ocean, was a big Slurpee mess, and as the set got closer to shore, there was enough force in the swell to make waves," Nimerfroh said. "You could have surfed them if it wasn’t slushy.”

Thankfully, he had his camera on hand:

Introvert Travel Just Became A Thing, Thanks To New 'Introvert Retreat' In England

Group tours, guided treks and big-name cruises sound like great vacation ideas at first, but then there are all. those. people. The point of travel is often to escape our fellow humans and get in touch with ourselves, not to schmooze and booze with a mashup of noisy others we've only just met.

Enter the Sacred Introvert Retreat, where quiet folk can travel, well, quietly. But with other people.

The 10-day tour takes place in and around Glastonbury, England, a small market town known for its proximity to ancient and mystical sites. Introverts will stay in a 36-acre abbey estate with orchards, ponds and a bee colony. They'll take guided tours of Stonehenge, a neolithic tomb, ancient Roman baths and trees said to inspire Tolkien's tales.

But all this, of course, will be done with an introvert's needs in mind.

During tours, there will be "no rushing from place to place and no tour guide barking over your thoughts," the tour's site promises. For every day spent adventuring, travelers will have a quiet "local day," where they can cruise around their estate in silence or venture to nearby healing springs, churches and inns. There will be yoga and meditation sessions, a bonfire, a pub night and a workshop on the merits of being an introvert.

The whole point is to foster a sense of "quality intimacy" with self, others and nature by avoiding the bustle that comes with other group trips. Sounds like a true vacation.

Spot-On Bon Jovi Parody Takes On Parents' Instagram Addictions

In our social media-crazed culture, people often feel like life isn't actually happening if it's not documented on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/etc. This is the theme of the newest parody video from What's Up Moms, "Livin' for the Share."

Parodying Bon Jovi's karaoke-ready hit "Livin' on a Prayer," the moms highlight their often comical determination when it comes to capturing the perfect vacation photo to share on social media. From dead batteries to bad lighting to an overload of selfies, it's clear no obstacle is too big for parents set on documenting their family memories.

And, summing up what so many parents know to be true, the captions at the beginning of the video read, "for every perfect photo, there are 100 that didn't make the cut."

It's Not A Mirage: Tiny Oasis Town Of Huacachina Thrives In Middle Of Dry Desert

Your eyes are telling the truth.

Huacachina is no mirage -- it's a tiny town of less than 100 people, located in the middle of the Peruvian desert.

The tourist hotspot is back in the news this week, but people looking to visit the "oasis of America" should be aware, it's running out of water.

As The Huffington Post warned last year:

The tiny town (population: about 100) of Huacachina is centered around a charming oasis, but it's drying up. What's more, local authorities are having a hard time refilling it with water from a nearby spring.

So please, take a look at Huacachina in all its glory, and, if we were you, we'd plan our trip sooner than later.

Couple Quits Day Jobs, Builds Quaint, Tiny Home On Wheels To Travel The Country

When Guillaume Dutilh and Jenna Spesard quit their jobs two years ago, they decided to go big -- by going tiny.

The two built a 125-square-foot "tiny house" (185 square feet if you count the loft) on a 20-foot-long trailer, latched it onto a pickup truck, and turned North America into their playground with a massive (and ongoing) road trip.

In the past five months, Business Insider reports the two have put 10,290 miles on their odometer while touring 25 states and parts of eastern Canada along with their dog, Salies. They have plans to visit at least 11 more states -- and that includes a trip to Alaska and back.

"We enjoy the new freedom this lifestyle has afforded us," Spesard explained to The Huffington Post in an email. "We get to travel all over the country and go on new adventures almost daily. We work online and from the road. North America is our backyard!"

Of course, building a tiny house is easier said than done. This particular project took more than 1,000 hours of labor (not counting research), required more than 6,500 nails, 8,000 screws and cost $29,328.

And it's not without some inconveniences, either. The two hit a laundromat on a weekly basis, and there's no room for a bathtub "for the occasional relaxing soak," Spesard said. Overall, though, "it hasn't been difficult for us to adjust," she added.

Scroll down for a tour of their tiny house (and to see some of their adventures!). For more on their travels, visit the couple's YouTube channel and their website, Tiny House, Giant Journey.

Watch A Sinkhole In South Korea Instantly Swallow Two People

Two bus passengers in Seoul, South Korea, plummeted nearly 10 feet as an instant abyss opened up below them.

The unlucky travelers were exiting at their stop Friday when the sidewalk they stepped out onto gave way. Firefighters rescued the devoured man and woman, who suffered only minor injuries, according to The Guardian.

The whole ordeal was captured on the surveillance camera of the bus, and you can actually pinpoint the second that the sidewalk rips in half. Information about the cause of the sinkhole, which opened up not far from a construction site, is being sought by the Korean Geotechnical Society and city officials, the BBC reported.

Sinkholes, both man-made and naturally occurring, are common and open up on a daily basis, according to geologists cited by The New York Times. Florida even has a so-called "sinkhole season," and the website thesinkhole.org keeps tabs on the phenomenon.

Naturally occurring sinkholes happen when a surface layer of earth gives way due to the erosion of the bedrock below, while man-made ones can be caused by faulty construction. These sometimes result in city scenes akin to New York's dreaded sidewalk grate collapses, and are a reminder to always tread lightly.

Videographer Captures Elusive Green Flash At Sunset On Hawaii's North Shore

When it comes to the green flash at sunset, people fall into one of two camps: those who have seen it with their very eyes and swear by its majesty, and those who say it's just a figment of our imagination.

Hawaii-based videographer Eric Sterman falls into the former, having recently caught the flash while making a time-lapse video of the sunset on the north shore of Oahu. As the last sliver of sun falls below the horizon -- right after a couple of breaching whales make an appearance, because, Hawaii -- the video shows a quick green glint:

(Story continues below)

A video posted by Eric Sterman (@ericsterman) on

NASA explains that the sun could flash green before sunrise or after sunset because the atmosphere refracts the sunlight at that angle:

Like a weak prism, the Earth's atmosphere breaks white sunlight into colors, bending red colors slightly and green and blue colors through increasingly larger angles. When the sky is clear, a green flash just above the sun's edge can sometimes be seen for a second or so, when the sun is close to a distant horizon.

Because of Hawaii's wide open skies and seemingly endless horizons, the Aloha State offers one of the best chances you'll get to see the elusive green flash. Synchronizing it with beautiful breaching whales, however, might be a touch more difficult.

Uber, Starwood Preferred Guest Partnership Could Earn You A Free Hotel Stay

This is wheelie good news.

Starting Wednesday, travelers who ride with Uber can earn free hotel nights at Starwood Hotels. When you link Uber with your Starwood Preferred Guest account (which is free to set up, by the way), you'll earn at least one point for every $1 you spend on Uber... which could add up to a LOT of free night stays.

Hawaii's Most Epic And Illegal Hike May Be Gone Forever

Remember that strikingly stunning and famously illegal hike in Hawaii that gave you the chance to view paradise from the heavens?

To refresh your memory, here was what it looked like:

origpic

Well, thanks to a powerful storm, it's gone. Possibly forever. And we're heartbroken.

The Stairway to Heaven, Hawaii's beloved hike that could get you in trouble with the police and requires a $1 million insurance plan, was damaged during a storm that swept through the Hawaiian islands over Valentine's Day weekend.

After the storm damage, five hikers got stuck on the east side of the mountain's ridge and were trapped overnight. They were rescued by the Honolulu Fire Department the following morning.

Story continues below...

The historic metal staircase was installed during World War II and was officially declared off limits in the 1980s. Since then, security guards have been enlisted to discourage hikers.

While the narrow and steep steps were considered treacherous before, officials are now saying the trail is more dangerous than ever.

Honolulu's Board of Water Supply (the state-run agency placed in charge of the trail since it is located on watershed property) has given the notorious hike two options: give the trail to another agency to be better managed or remove it completely.

Community organizations, such as the Friends of Haiku Stairs, have offered to assess the damage and help make repairs, but the fate of the famous staircase is still very much up in the air.

While we mourn the potential loss of one America's best illegal views, let the photos below lead you on a hike up memory lane.

Armani, Versace And More Fashion Designers Create Fabulous Manhole Covers

From the catwalk to the sidewalk: some of Italy's most famous clothing designers have set haute couture aside for once and dedicated their creative verve to embellishing the streets of downtown Milan.

Twenty-four manhole covers designed by Giorgio Armani, Just Cavalli, Missoni, Prada and other important names from the world of high fashion, chiseled into relief and painted by hand, will now go on display on Montenapoleone Street in Milan, part of an exhibition called "Above the Below -- Manhole Cover Art and the Wired City."

While the columns and facades of palazzi in downtown Milan usually provide a canvas for unwanted urban art, rife with tags and graffiti, this time the protagonists are the discreet cast-iron manhole covers that passersby walk across every day and all weekend long. The web of wires and cables beneath these covers are the city's information highway, bouncing signals from one point to another. An invisible metropolis of wires and connections exists beneath our feet, and Metroweb -- a Milanese fiber optics company and the "patron" behind Tombini Art -- has decided to bring this subterranean world to everyone's attention.

In earlier editions of the exhibition, Italian and foreign street artists (including American Shepard Fairey, whose iconography of Barack Obama earned him international fame) were asked to redesign and decorate street manhole covers. This year, in honor of the International Expo in Milan, this open-air exhibition set along one of the most fashionable streets in the world was reserved for twenty-four famous Italians.

The exhibition will open February 24 and run until January 2016. As in the past, once Tombini Art is finished, the manhole covers on display will be cleaned up and restored, then sold at auction by Christie's. Metroweb will donate all proceeds from the auction to charity.

Photos Of School Lunches From Around The World Will Make American Kids Want To Study Abroad

More than one-third of kids in America are obese or overweight. In 2013, the National School Lunch Program, a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools, served 5.1 billion lunches, Bloomberg reports. The quality of these lunches must somehow correlate to the health of America's youth, considering more than 32 million children are served NSLP every day.

Parents could model better eating habits and stock their crispers with fresh fruit and vegetables, but a viable starter solution might begin at lunchtime. Sweetgreen, a healthy quick-serve restaurant that values local and organic ingredients, clarified disparity between American student lunches and those of other countries by photographing typical school lunches from around the world. The visuals are eye-opening.

A representative for the company told The Huffington Post that to create these mock meals, Sweetgreen evaluated different government standards for school lunch programs and compared the data to real photos from students who had posted on several social media platforms. Because school lunches can vary by region, it's important to note that the images below aren't exact representations of a country's school lunch, but offer a resemblance.

American politics acknowledge that our nation's children should not go hungry, but there's less of an emphasis on what exactly our children are being fed. With the great risks associated with being overweight and news that diet may be just as important to mental health as it is to physical health, the state of students' nutrition should be all it takes to improve the quality of the lunch tray -- think fewer chicken nuggets and more produce. But America's got some work to do.

That's not to say the country is apathetic: U.S. government sectors are making strides to improve the current condition of the food we're serving to our youth. For example, by 2013, all 1,300 of New York City's public elementary schools were equipped with a fresh salad bar in their cafeterias (and they'll be getting snazzier in the near future). First Lady Michelle Obama is vocal and active about her passion for standardizing healthy meals and snacks for children. And in 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, which requires child nutrition programs to improve and help schools provide healthier meals, including more fruits and vegetables.

A typical lunch served in the U.S.

Fried "popcorn" chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, fruit cup and a chocolate chip cookie.

Comparatively, countries have got us beat when it comes to school lunches, nourishing their students with fresher, greener and more nutrient-rich foods that are very much brain foods. There's less fried stuff, less brown mush (see above).

Take a look at the photos of school lunches served around the globe, originally posted on Sweetgreen's Tumblr. Which lunch do you want your child to be eating?

Southwest Airlines Grounds 128 Planes After Failing To Inspect Backup Hydraulic Systems

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines Co. says it has grounded 128 planes after failing to inspect backup hydraulic systems used to control the rudder if the main system fails.

The airline said Tuesday night that it had canceled 90 flights so far. The grounding covers about one-fifth its fleet. Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said that after discovering the missed inspections, the airline immediately notified federal safety regulators and began checking the planes.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, Lynn Lunsford, said that the FAA was working with Southwest and Boeing, which manufactured the planes, to evaluate a plan that would let the airline keep flying the planes until the inspections are completed over the next few days.

The missed inspections were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

King called the missed inspections inadvertent. She said the airline discovered that 128 of its Boeing 737-700 jets already had flown beyond the point at which the backup hydraulic systems were supposed to be inspected. She said safety was the airline's top priority, and it was working to fix the matter quickly.

Dallas-based Southwest is the nation's fourth-biggest airline. It has 665 jets, all of which are some version of the Boeing 737, including nearly 450 of the 737-700. That model seats 137 or 143 passengers, depending on the layout.

World Spay Day Encourages Pet Owners To Take Part In The Fight Against Overpopulation

Look at this face.

stray dog

Like millions of other animals around the country, this stray pup could use a home, and you can help. For the past 21 years, The Humane Society of the United States has been encouraging pet owners to spay and neuter their pets during World Spay Day.

The Humane Society estimates more than 2.4 million healthy, adoptable pets are put down in the U.S. every year -- that's about one every 13 seconds. But there's a simple solution that can be better for both the increasing problem of overpopulation and your pet's health: Get your four-legged friends spayed or neutered.

Americans have made quite a lot of progress over the past few decades and 87 percent of owned cats and dogs are fixed, Vicki Stevens, a senior project manager with HSUS, told The Huffington Post over email. But one of the largest sources for strays are so-called "community animals" -- pets that live on the street and don't have loving owners to take care of them.

It's a very real problem you can help fix by heading to a local shelter, but without adequate spaying and neutering, healthy animals will continue to show up at already overcrowded shelters.

"Within the next year, nearly 17 million households across America will acquire a new dog or cat," Stevens said. "Clearly, if only a fraction of these households adopt from a shelter, we would save the life of every healthy, adoptable cat or dog. We want pet lovers throughout the country to make shelters their first choice for acquiring companion animals."

Fixing your pet can be expensive, but there are some solutions for low-income families around the country, like The Toby Project, which provides free and low-cost services to those in the New York City area. Make a call to your local animal shelter to ask what options you can find near you.

If you're looking for a companion of your own and are ready for the responsibility, take a look at the ASPCA adoption site or Petfinder.com.

The Best Beach In The World Is One You've Never Heard Of

With so many famous beaches on this planet, you'd think it would be easy to guess which one is "the best beach in the world." Is it a Caribbean oasis in St. Barts? A Greek isle? The infamous Copacabana?

Nope, the best beach in the world is one you've likely never heard of. Brace yourself for the beauty of Baia do Sancho, Brazil.

This idyllic beach ranks #1 on TripAdvisor's annual Travelers' Choice survey for the best beaches in the world. It's holding on to its top spot from last year.

The secret swath of land is surrounded by cliffs in Fernando de Noronha, an island group a couple hundred miles off the coast of Brazil. You'll take a long, rocky trek or a boat to get there, but you'll be well rewarded once you arrive.

Baia do Sancho's blue-green water is filled with coral reefs that pretty much beg for snorkeling. You can swim, trek to see dolphins, or simply enjoy being on one of the emptiest beaches you've seen in a long time. (An added bonus? Hotels in the area run cheap.)

We'd say this really is the best of the best.

Puerto Rico Is The Beach Getaway You're Craving, And It's Easier Than You Think

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Sometimes you just need a quick trip to the beach. But as an American without a passport — mine had been stolen — I had limited options for an easy but interesting getaway.

I decided to try Puerto Rico. The island, which is a U.S. territory, offers for Americans all the comforts of domestic travel — easy entry, no extra charges for cell phone service, and the U.S. dollar as the currency. But Puerto Rico also has Caribbean beaches and Latin culture along with waterfalls, colonial Spanish history and good food and drink. That made it more appealing to me than a stateside beach.

I convinced my first-grade pen pal to join me at the very last minute, and we spent five days relaxing on the beach, exploring old San Juan, hiking through the island's rain forest and, of course, enjoying tropical drinks as we pondered our futures.

Puerto Rico has two seasons: wet and dry. Prices tend to be lower in the rainy months, April to November, but that's because you run the risk of getting stuck inside your hotel room waiting for the rain to subside. Traveling there last fall, I knew this going in, but was willing to take my chances.

Take my chances I did. The first full day on the island found us in the middle of a possible hurricane that led the government to shut down alcohol sales at all restaurants for a few hours. Talk about a buzzkill.

Ultimately, the ban was lifted and my friend and I were able to enjoy margaritas and pina coladas while eating mofongo, a plantain mash that can be served with meat, seafood, chicken or vegetables.

The hurricane ended up passing by the island overnight, so the next day we were able to explore historic Old San Juan, which includes a National Historic Landmark district and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Christopher Columbus landed here in 1493 and Ponce de Leon founded a settlement on the island in 1508. Centuries-old waterfront forts, La Fortaleza and El Morro, were built to protect it from invasion. Puerto Rico remained a Spanish colony until 1898, when the U.S. took over following the Spanish-American War. La Fortaleza remains in use as the governor's mansion.

A large gate and tunnel, Puerta de San Juan, still lead to the old city through what's left of the tall walls that once surrounded it. Pink, blue, green and yellow buildings caught our eyes as we wandered the cobblestone streets with their fountains and plazas.

We also spent a day at El Yunque, Puerto Rico's famous tropical rain forest. Many visitors rent a car and make the trek on their own from San Juan — it's about 30 minutes away — but we booked a guided tour through our hotel that included a hike and swimming beneath a waterfall. There are several different places where you can swim, but be prepared for a bit of adventure, including slippery rocks and a river with a rope swing.

After a couple of days of sightseeing, we were ready to indulge in the main reason we'd come here. Our hotel, like many in San Juan, was right on the beach, and that's where we headed.

Strange And Surreal Photographs Chronicle The Happy Magic Of Germany's Spa Towns

Throughout Germany, there are approximately 300 spa towns, each combining specialized rehabilitation clinics and wellness programs to yield a futuristic microcosm, a utopian hideaway for patients (and, in some cases, their pets) to enjoy. Photographer Alexander Krack became fascinated with these uncanny destinations, located somewhere between a hospital stay and a fever dream.

Krack visited 40 distinct spa towns, chronicling his findings in an intriguing photography series entitled "The Treatment." The photographs represent Krack's quest for a unifying aesthetic somehow consolidating each peculiar locale, something that tied together a rehab center for animals with a treatment facility for a chronic disease such as rheumatism.

craxk

Although most patrons residing in these spa towns are past retirement age, Krack found his time spent there conjured strange and beautiful memories of his youth. "The more I delved into this world, memories from my childhood emerged when a chronic bronchitis made me spent several summers in a spa town in the mountains," he explained in a statement. "They are memories of beautiful nature, strange medical machines and elder people in white coats. To me there was always an ambivalence in those memories, aesthetically and emotionally. Almost as in a dream where one can never be sure if things are really the way they seem and where a tree can suddenly turn into a giant."

Many of the available treatments offered at such establishments veer awfully close to the surreal. For example, those using cold chambers, meant to alleviate the pains of chronic arthritis, sit for three minutes in temperatures reaching minus 110 degrees Celsius. And then there's the adit, a mud-covered cave that's meant to cleanse your lungs. "Within the adit is a micro climate that keeps a constant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius throughout the whole year," Krack explained to Vice. "Humidity is at nearly 100 percent and the air is almost completely free of dust particles, germs and allergenic pollen. Therefore the air is supposedly really good for your lungs. Also theres is a spring inside the adit that releases so called reduced water which is supposed to work as a catcher of free radicals."

The images, ranging from sweet to scientific to very strange, depict a place seemingly rooted in both the future and the past. If Willy Wonka opened a medical facility or David Lynch started a day spa, we suspect they'd look something like this. To see more images and the limited edition book, check out his website.

Here's Footage Of Puddle Of Mudd's Wes Scantlin Riding A Luggage Carousel, Getting Arrested

Life's a ride when you're a rock star. Sometimes, that's just a ride around an airport luggage carousel -- and it ends with said rockstar getting arrested.

Puddle of Mudd lead singer Wes Scantlin -- one of the brains behind the 2001 hit, "She Hates Me" -- was arrested last month for hopping on the oversize baggage carousel at Denver International Airport. Yesterday, Denver's 7News published security camera footage of the incident:

"Evidently, someone in their group was egging him on to do it," Seth Daniels, the promoter behind the band's January 16 show in Denver, told Westword after the incident. "They were videotaping it for, I don't know, TryToStayRelevant.com," he joked.

Days later, Scantlin appeared to acknowledged the incident, posting this pseudo-apology on Facebook:

In an email to The Huffington Post, DIA spokesman Heath Montgomery said this was a rare incident for the airport. He could only recall one other carousel-rider, almost 20 years ago. In this case, Montgomery said Scantlin "was detected and apprehended almost immediately."

As for why it's illegal, Montgomery explained Scantlin was actually trespassing. The rear of the carousel accesses a section of the airport that's off limits to passengers.

"There is a baggage make-up area used by the airlines behind the carousel," he explained. "It’s a secured area of the airport and restricted to airport and airline employees."

Compounding matters, 7News reports Scantlin was already a wanted man in Denver. In 2006, police caught him driving without a license, speeding 25 to 39 mph over the limit. He failed to appear in court and had a warrant issued for his arrest.

This isn't the rocker's first run-in with airport security, either. In 2012, a JetBlue flight had to make an emergency landing in Texas after Scantlin created a disturbance onboard. Police in Austin charged him with public intoxication.

JetBlue's 'Flying It Forward' Gives Passengers Free Flights, Just For Being Nice

When traveling is so incredibly chaotic, it's refreshing to see an airline do something nice -- and we're talking more than just free snacks.

JetBlue has done a host of heart-melting deeds in its day, from orchestrating a proposal to surprising immigrants with flights home. They've delivered mid-air gifts to an engaged couple and even offered to serve as witnesses at the wedding.

And then there's one really big act of kindness that the airline says it isn't about to brag about.

"We're not necessarily going to publicize [Flying It Forward]," says Morgan Johnston, a JetBlue communications manager. "It would be disingenuous to do so."

JetBlue's Flying It Forward program is a chain of free flights, gifted from one person to the next. It started with Tameka Lawson, a Chicago local who wanted to represent her non-profit at a conference in New York. JetBlue flew her there for free, on the condition that she pass the flight along to someone else in need.

Lawson passed the flight to Teena Katz, who was left handicapped after a subway accident. Katz flew to Seattle and passed the flight to a street artist so he could paint more murals around the country. The flight has since flown a passenger to Haiti to build his neighborhood library and a mom to Portland for a family reunion.

All in all, "Flying It Forward" has flown 10 people to eight cities over five months, and the chain is far from stopping.

We must say it's exhilarating to watch an airline not only do something nice, but also not look for press when it does so. You can nominate yourself or a friend to Flying It Forward online, and watch the good cheer fly even farther.
