This Tiny Sicilian Town Should Be Your Next Vacation Destination

By Luisa Taliento

Sun. That’s the title of the novella D. H. Lawrence wrote when he stayed in Taormina from 1921 to 1923, in the house on Via Fontana (the same one Truman Capote lived in thirty years later). The plot was simple. On the advice of her doctor, a New York woman travels to the Italian town, a place where the sun would help her recuperate. It is an evocative image, a beautiful place as a salve for body, mind and heart; a feeling of healthy pleasure that can still be felt today because this corner of Sicily has always remained true to itself. Even though it is on the sea, the main draw of the city is the pedestrian- only city center perched on a hill, 676 feet above sea level, so that its panoramic vistas change according to the time of day. For example, the morning light is the best for visiting the Greek Theater. The “gash” that time opened in its architecture has enriched it with a view of the Bay of Giardini Naxos, with the stark outline of Mount Etna in the background.

But the early afternoon is the perfect time to take the stairs to Piazzetta Isola Bella. In the past, Taormina fisherman took this path to the sea as well as to reach the Isolabella and Mazzarò beaches. Small stretches of gray-pebbled shores are enjoyable in the winter as well because the temperatures never drop below 59 °F and there are even people who go swimming in late December. The Sicilian coast vaunts an average of 2,665 hours of sun a year, so the climate creates a setting in which the classic Mediterranean maquis can be found alongside bougainvillea, palms and banana trees. After swimming and soaking up the sun, reserve a table overlooking the sea to taste the cuisine of Trattoria da Nino, but be sure to leave room for some cassata at the end of the meal.

Taormina is one of Italy’s top towns in terms of friendliness and hospitality. This wonderful feeling is evident when you stroll down Corso Umberto to go shopping and enjoy street food. It would also be impossible not to chat with the sisters working at the Arancini in Corso rotisserie and learn the recipe for arancini, “balls” of rice filled with meat sauce and deep- fried. The owner of Bam Bar also eagerly tells the story of his locale, where you sit at ceramic tables and savor his famous granitas in natural flavors, everything from fig to almond. To spend the night in the style of Don Fabrizio Salina, the protagonist of Tomasi di Lampedusa novel The Leopard, try the suites
at the San Domenico Palace, built in an ancient Dominican monastery (tel. +39 0942 613111, san-domenico-palace. com). The new NH Collection Taormina has a more contemporary style, built in a twentieth- century building, with a 5,400-square-foot terrace (+39 02 87367717, nh-hotels.it) so you can totally fill up on light and sunshine.

The Laundry List: What To Read, Relive And Love This Weekend

Friday is finally upon us. Get ready for your weekend with our handy list of everything you need to know, read, watch, and possibly bookmark.

Then go reclaim your weekend -- unplug, decompress and renew. We've got you.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Figure out your decision making style, and everything else will fall into place -- or at least make more sense. According to Science Of Us, "Knowing How You Decide Is As Important As The Decision." Word.

GET INSPIRED: Glamour celebrated its Women Of The Year Awards this week. Amy Schumer hosted the event, many women attended, some were honored, like Reese Witherspoon, Caitlyn Jenner and Misty Copeland. Check out these 12 knowledge bombs dropped by this year's honorees and guests.

READ: "Living And Dying On Airbnb" by Zak Stone is the long read of the weekend. It's a harrowing account and incredibly sad, but definitely worth it.

GET DOWN WITH: Missy Elliott's WTF (Where They From) ft. Pharrell Williams. Now this is what we call a comeback.

GIVE: The season of gift-giving is upon us. We've got gift ideas for virtually everyone, but let us single out Momfuku's Grand Slam gift pack, which includes everything from a compost cookie mix to Lucky Peach's new cookbook. Your food-loving friends (or everyone you know) will thank you.

PREPARE YOURSELF: Whether you're ready or not, the holidays are coming. Gear up for the season of parties, gift-giving and general festivities, and start with this delightful guide on "how to set boundaries during the holidays."

GROUND YOURSELF:
Stay grounded with Ethan Hawke's book, "Rules For A Knight," which came out this week. In The New Yorker's interview with the actor/writer, Hawke explains how the concept for the book evolved over about 10 years (cue the "Boyhood" soundtrack) and includes not just personal "rules" of the Hawke family, but also golden nuggets from the likes of "other knights," such as Emily Dickinson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Mother Teresa.

PENCIL IT IN: Seriously. Get on board the adult coloring book train, because it's an amazing way to unwind. Need convincing? Just try to resist purchasing a coloring book for yourself after reading this this confession, "I Use Adult Coloring Books And I'm Not Ashamed To Say It."

SALIVATE OVER: And now that you've worked on taking care of yourself, give yourself a treat and check out this POV video of a pizza being madeJust be ready for the pizza attack that will follow immediately upon the video's conclusion.

DRINK TO: Wash your pizza down with a big glass of wine, because your hangover days may be numbered. Munchies reported this week that "A Scientific Breakthrough Could Make Your Wine into Hangover-Free Magic." We'll definitely drink to that.

WATCH: Finally, if you do one thing this weekend, watch "Master of None" on Netflix. (And if you've already watched it, there's no harm in giving it another go.) Aziz Ansari's new show "hilariously captures the immigrant narrative." Ansari is predictably amazing, and Vulture points out that "On Master of None, the Kids Are All Right, But the Parents Are Better." Enjoy!

6 Cleaning Tricks From Hotel Housekeeping That We Should All Borrow

When it comes to cleaning -- and cleaning fast -- hotel housekeeping knows what's up.

The above video lays out some pro tips we'd never heard of -- and ones we can't wait to try out. When used correctly, they'll turn your home into the likes of a hotel suite. For example:

  • Vacuum into the room, then out. That way, you'll hit high-traffic spots twice without re-tracing your steps.

  • Do the bathroom last. You'll minimize transferring goo and bacteria to the rest of your space.

  • A toothbrush is your greatest weapon. Use it on bathroom grout to zap dirt from nooks and crannies.

Watch the video above for more. ...And if that's not enough, browse some other top cleaning tips below.

Dachshund Cruises Airport In Pilot's Uniform, Commands Attention

If the guy played by Leonardo DiCaprio in "Catch Me If You Can" could impersonate an airline pilot, why not Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund?

Watch the dog cruise the airport in his adorably tailored uniform. The dignified and trustworthy face of "Wiener Airlines" looks like he belongs, doesn't he?

Just be careful of his tail wind.

Star Wars Plane Lands At Singapore Airport

Star Wars fans can take their love for the franchise to soaring new heights.

A real-life Star Wars aircraft landed at Singapore's Changi Airport on Thursday to kick off the airport's #StarWarsatChangi event.

All Nippon Airway's R2-D2 themed jet made its grand entrance at the airport and will be stationed there for two days, according to the Bangkok Post. The first-ever commercial jets bearing the Star Wars livery are part of the company's five year "Star Wars" project that they announced earlier this year.

The Changi airport also has some other very special treats for Star Wars fanatics. Life-size replicas of the X-wing Fighter used by the Rebel Alliance and the Empire's TIE Fighter are on display in the terminals as well, according to Today.

Visitors will have until January 5th to see the replicas and board the X-Wing fighter, which will unfortunately remain grounded.

But it's a good thing some Stormtroopers made an appearance to keep excited fans at bay:

Move Over Cat Cafes, This Cat Pub Is Taking Over

It’s the purr-fect place to unwind with a pint of beer - so long as you like cats.

That’s because the Bag ‘O’ Nails in Bristol, England, doesn’t just have one resident kitty.

No, this old-fashioned British drinking den has an astonishing 15 furry felines patrolling its premises while receiving cuddles from adoring customers.

Self-confessed “cat-man” landlord Luke Daniels started off with just two of the animals, according to the Western Daily Press.

But things slowly snowballed, with, at one point, some 24 cats -- all born inside the building -- calling the pub home.

One of the cute critters was even welcomed into the world inside an empty potato chip bag during a quiz night.

The number has now scaled back as “that was too much,” said Daniels.

But the cats -- ranging from tabbies to tortoise shells and black and whites -- are still a major draw for drinkers, who have posted dozens of images of themselves enjoying a pint and a purr at the venue on Instagram.

“The reaction is mostly positive,” the Bristol Post reports him as saying.

“Occasionally you might have some people walking in and leaving and some might be allergic to cats, but people love it,” he added.

But not everyone is happy with the business, however.

A spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) told the Telegraph that the animals’ welfare must be considered.

"We certainly wouldn't recommend drinkers sharing their favorite tipple with the cats, as alcohol is a poison which can cause them serious harm and suffering,” the spokesperson reportedly said.

Daniels revealed that the cats were named mostly after Roman emperors because of their “strong names,” reports the Western Daily Press.

The clowder includes Absinthe, Salvador, Philomena Hercules, Hadassah, Lucifer, Boris, Rasputin, Cirrus and Stratus, Wolfgang and Therese.

8 Stunning Natural Rock Formations And The Legends That Make Them Sacred

Majestic and unusual rock formations have long evoked strong feelings of awe and wonder. As a result, these strange and beautiful natural structures were often weaved into ancient communities' sacred stories.

According to professor Paul S.C. Taçon, an anthropologist and archaeologist at Australia's Griffith University, ancient people thought of these irregularities in the landscape as places where the sky, earth and underworld met. They were, and still are, seen as places of power, where people can experience a connection to the divine.

Here are eight gorgeous rock formations, along with the myths and stories that make them sacred.
