How One NFL Franchise Is Helping Nursing Moms

Attending Vikings home games just got a little bit easier for nursing moms.

On Oct. 18, the Minnesota Vikings became the first NFL team to offer designated in-stadium spaces for nursing moms who wish to pump or breastfeed in private. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony before their home game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team unveiled two nursing suites that were installed in TCF Bank Stadium through a partnership with Mamava -- a business that manufactures lactation "pods" with comfortable seats, power outlets and fold down tables. 

"We certainly encourage mothers to breastfeed wherever they feel comfortable, but these suites provide clean, private and comfortable options outside of a family bathroom or a first-aid station," Vikings Chief Operating Officer Kevin Warren told The Huffington Post. "This gives mothers flexibility while attending a three-hour game and allows them to also keep a small child in tow during the process."

Warren says that the idea to create lactation spaces came from separate one-on-one meetings with two female employees, Erin Swartz and Alicia Dreyer. "Within our discussions, Erin and Alicia made me aware of the breastfeeding challenges that they and other female employees have faced both at the team’s training facility and on Vikings game days at our previous stadium," he explained. 

Shortly after those meetings, Warren noticed a Mamava pod at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, which prompted him to contact the company's co-founder Sascha Mayer. They developed a partnership between the Vikings and Mamava and in September announced plans to install lactation suites in TCF Bank Stadium.

The two Mamava stations debuted over the weekend -- with one located just off the main concourse near Gate A and the other inside the lodge and club seating area. Both are available to all fans, Warren said, adding that the reaction to the new additions during the Chiefs game was "extremely positive."

"We had nearly 20 mothers use the stations with many more expressing their appreciation and noting they would use them moving forward," he said. "We received some constructive feedback about how to make the suites better, and we will implement those changes in time for the next home game on November 8."

In addition to the two in-stadium Mamava pods, there is one at the Vikings Winter Park training facility in Eden Prairie and one in their downtown Minneapolis offices. 

But their support for parents will extend beyond those four new fixtures, Warren said. "While this is certainly a positive step for nursing mothers, we plan to further create a family-friendly environment within U.S. Bank Stadium when it opens next year with the continuation of the Mamava suites, as well as the exploration of a nursing area that will allow moms to stay connected to the game."

Warren also emphasized the franchise's broader goal to support female fans. "We will continue to find ways to grow the Vikings relationship with women, who are an incredibly important component of our fan base," he said.

The Vikings are one of several U.S. sports teams that have been implementing stadium resources for nursing mothers. Back in March, the Cincinnati Reds unveiled the Pampers Nursing Suite for moms who want to feed their babies away from the stands at Great American Ball Park. In August, the Washington Nationals opened a breastfeeding lounge at Nationals Park.

There's An 'Eerily Untouched' WWII Bomber In Hawaii You Need To See

In February 1942, after America's first heavy bomber offensive raid of World War II, a bullet-riddled U.S. B-17E bomber crash landed in a remote swamp in Papua New Guinea because it was running out of fuel.

The crew of nine survived, and over the next six weeks, battled malaria and heat exhaustion to make their way to safety. But the Flying Fortress was left for lost for decades. The plane has a pretty incredible story, and getting it back to Hawaii was no small feat. 

After a half-century in the soggy marsh, this once-forgotten piece of history returned to its homeland in April 2013, and is sitting on display at Hawaii's Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor.

It wasn't until 1972, three decades after its crash, that Australian soldiers spotted the partially submerged aircraft from a helicopter. They landed on one of its wings to investigate and found it "eerily untouched," according to John Darnton's article in Smithsonian magazine. 

"The machine guns were in place, fully loaded, and in the cabin there was a thermos with what used to be coffee inside," Darnton wrote. "Some claim there was even an ashtray with cigarette butts." Local press nicknamed the plane "Swamp Ghost."

It took years of negotiations between the salvage team, led by former WWII bomber pilot and famed aircraft collector David C. Tallichet, and the Papua New Guinea government. Kenneth DeHoff, the Pacific Aviation Museum's executive director of operations, says it was well worth it, however, calling "Swamp Ghost" a national treasure.

"It’s one of those first-time original airplanes, if you will," he told The Huffington Post. "I’m just in awe."

"Swamp Ghost" is arguably the world’s only intact and un-retired World War II-era B-17E bomber, a "one-of-a-kind example of an aircraft that played an indispensable role in winning WWII," according to the Pacific Aviation Museum. And it is the only B-17 in the world that still bears its battle scars.

"This airplane was such a fortress," DeHoff said. "We counted 121 bullet holes in it." 

As for the aircraft's original crew, they had one week of rest after their ordeal and then were reassigned to another bomber. They continued to fly for the rest of the war.  According to Darnton, the plane's pilot, Capt. Frederick “Fred” C. Eaton, would often fly over the wreck and tell his new crew about how all nine men survived. 

Now, visitors can see the plane up-close in its original wreckage state with the Pacific Aviation Museum's special B-17E Swamp Ghost Tour. Consider this a must-do when visiting Hawaii.

Airbnb Apologizes For Posting Snarky Ads Aimed At Schools & Libraries

Airbnb is apologizing for a series of ads posted in San Francisco that seemed critical of schools, libraries, parking enforcement and other government services -- ads that struck such a sour note that many believed them to be a hoax. 

The residential hosting company admitted to placing the ads, but said they will be coming down "immediately." 

Each ad was "addressed" to various public agencies and told them how to spend the estimated $12 million in hotel taxes paid by Airbnb hosts and guests. 

"Dear Public Library System," read one ad. "We hope you use some of the $12 million in hotel taxes to keep the library open later." 

On Facebook, San Francisco resident Martha Kenney wrote a blistering response: 

Out of your $12 mil of hotel tax, only 1.4% percent goes to the SF Public Libraries. So that's $168,000. Divided by the 868 library staff, we have $193 per person. Assuming each employee works 5 days per week minus holidays, this is $0.78 per employee per day. Since that's significantly under San Francisco minimum wage ($12.25/hr), I doubt that your hotel tax can keep the libraries open more than a minute or two later.

An Airbnb spokesman told The Huffington Post that the intent of the ads was to show the hotel tax contributions made by the company's guests and hosts.

"It was the wrong tone and we apologize to anyone who was offended," Christopher Nulty said via email. "These ads are being taken down immediately.” 

The company has reportedly spent $8 million to fight Proposition F, a ballot measure that would limit private rentals to 75 nights per year.

"Had you donated that $8 million you spent fighting Proposition F directly to the public libraries you love so much, that could have made a bigger difference," Kenney added in her Facebook post.
