The incident occurred aboard Flight 577 headed toward Boston at about 3:04 p.m., according to NBC Chicago. The woman was trying to silence her snoring seatmate and jabbed him repeatedly, Southwest spokesperson Brandy King told the station.
Firefighters were called in to evaluate the man, who wasn't seriously injured.
"The flight departed shortly after the passenger was removed," King said. "The passenger in question will be accommodated on a later flight."
The flight was delayed at Midway International Airport for two hours, according to ABC Chicago.
It wasn't immediately clear whether charges were being discussed.
