Behold The Race of Gentlemen, an annual hot rod derby on the Wildwood slice of the New Jersey Shore. For the past four years, both car and kitsch enthusiasts have gathered to watch sand fly as vehicles race down the beach in what organizers call a "living history event."
To qualify, cars must be produced before 1935. Motorcycles must be pre-1947. And drivers travel from all corners of the U.S. to prove their vintage grit at the wheel.
Photographer Johannes Huwe's book "The Race of Gentlemen" captures the scene, which is as close as we've ever come to a trip back in time:
