In the above "Super Soul Sunday" clip, Iyer tells Oprah to imagine they are traveling to Venice, Italy tomorrow. "And we spend, let's say, a week there and we're lucky enough to be able to take a trip there," he says.
While the trip may only be seven days, Iyer explains that a truly great vacation lasts much longer. "If it's a good trip, we will spend the rest of our lifetimes going over our memories, looking at our photographs, re-reading our journals," he says. "The week is really just like an appetizer for the main course, which takes place when you're back at home sitting still processing everything you've been."
"It's almost as if travel is giving you the raw material but it's stillness that gives you the meaning of what you've experienced," Iyer continues. "And you collect these sights around the world and you come home and you turn them into insights in some ways, and you see how can what I witnessed in Johannesburg or Venice affect my life here in the United States."
