Soon Delta Won't Let You Check A Pet As Baggage

Delta will no longer allow pets to be checked as baggage starting March 1, 2016, a change that'll make plenty of concerned animal lovers happy.

That's because flying dogs and cats in cargo holds can be dangerous: The U.S. Department of Transportation reports Delta has highest number of recorded pet deaths between May 2005 and September 2015, according to MarketWatch. Seventy-four pets have died in the decade-long timespan, while 14 have been lost.

That's a small percentage of pets that have flown Delta, but as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals notes, more than 5,000 animals are killed, lost or injured on commercial flights every year according to the Airline Transportation Association. Pets who didn't survive succumbed to lack of oxygen, stress, extreme temperature changes and irresponsible handling.

Animals small enough to fit in a carrier under their owner's seat can still be carried on board, and Delta will also still allow certain military pets and documented service and emotional support animals to board inside the cabin.

As an alternative, Delta points out owners can also pay for Delta Cargo's pet shipping service. This comes with a couple of travel inconveniences compared to checking a pet as baggage: Pets must be dropped off three hours before flight takeoff at a different location than human travelers' departure point, and Delta says it can’t guarantee that pets will arrive at their destinations at the same time as their owners. However, pets are held in climate-controlled areas and vehicles before and after their flights, and are under the care of customer service staff while they travel. The service runs between $200 and $400 for one-way domestic flights.

A Week After Attacks, Paris Is As Strong As Ever

It's been a week since attackers unleashed chaos on Paris, killing at least 130 people and wounding hundreds more, but the city still feels as vibrant and passionate as ever.

Photos collected from around the city in the days following the attacks show mourners huddled together in solidarity as well as countless memorials for the deceased. The images also show a glimpse of life returning to normal: scenes of friends dining together at cafes, tourists visiting popular attractions, travelers heading home on the train.

Ireland Is The Prettiest Country In Europe, Just FYI

For adventurous travelers, Ireland is the ultimate playground. This blazing-green country is home to not only historic castles, quaint cobblestone streets and charming medieval towns, but also a robust national park system that boasts -- among other things -- one heck of a road trip along the country's rugged coast.

Call us crazy, but it's got to be the prettiest country in Europe... at least based on these photos.

Drone photographer Raymond Fogarty, of AirCam Ireland, traveled more than 1,500 miles down the coast to capture a series of striking images that make Ireland look more like a Caribbean island than a country in western Europe. If these images don't inspire you to get up and book a flight -- or convince you that even a nation famed for beer can be this beautiful -- then absolutely nothing will.

Muggles, prepare thyselves: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood this spring, and it looks positively magical in its first video tour.

In the brand new preview, a Hogwarts Express conductor shows us all of Hogsmeade's the themed attraction's most important sites, from Three Broomsticks to Hog's Head Pub to Honeydukes sweet shop. ("The chocolate frogs can be a bit of trouble to eat," he warns.)

Wizarding World Hollywood will open sometime in spring 2016. If your broomstick can't fly you down to the Wizarding World at Universal Studios Orlando, this will be a great West Coast option.

Aircraft Laser Strikes Soar To All-Time High

People increasingly are pointing lasers at aircraft, despite hefty fines and prison sentences for those who are caught.

On one night this month, aviation authorities logged 20 laser strikes in at least 16 cities, adding to the year's already record number of strikes. The Federal Aviation Administration has reported 5,352 laser strikes in 2015 through Oct. 16, compared with 3,894 in all of 2014.

The surge may have to do with the cheap price of laser pointers and their easy availability, said Tammy Jones, an FAA spokeswoman. The tiny lasers -- the kind you see in work meetings -- appear harmless, but when their light hits the windshield of an airliner cockpit, they can completely blind pilots.

"We suffered flash blindness, after-imaging and then retinal burning that continued on for a while," pilot Robert Hamilton told CBS News, describing five laser strikes he's experienced as his crews were either taking off or landing. "We have to complete checklists, configure the aircraft, change our speed, change our pitch attitude, prepare the aircraft for landing or taking off, and at that moment to have our vision taken away from us, which is the most critical phase of flight is a very serious safety risk."

Federal measures against air strikes include fines of up to $250,000 and up to 20 years in prison. In 2014, the FBI piloted a reward program offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of "any individual who aims a laser at an aircraft."

Still, those perpetrating the crimes are rarely punished. Since 2005, 162 people have been arrested for laser strikes and only 86 have been convicted -- distressingly low figures compared with the thousands of laser strikes over the decade.

Most aircraft aren't equipped to locate the source of lasers. And sometimes, charges against those who are caught are dropped because perpetrators don't fully understand the potential danger of their actions.

Offenders are typically males, from teenagers to men in their 50s, according to the FAA.

A news helicopter for the NBC affiliate in New York City was hit by a laser last week. A bright green light filled the cockpit as the helicopter flew over Prospect Heights. An NYPD helicopter was hit by a laser strike nearby around the same time.

The NBC helicopter's camera crew aimed the lens at the laser source, filming the perpetrators in the act. Police caught two people and charged one with reckless endangerment.

On the same night, three aircraft near Dallas Love Field also were hit by laser strikes.

This Sweet Photo Of A Pup's Last Car Ride Proves All Dogs Go To Heaven

Animals know better than most that the best things in life really are free.

Florida resident April Kramer recently shared a sweet tribute to her late dog, Libra, by posting a photo of the pup peacefully enjoying her very last car ride. In the photo, which Kramer took right before taking Libra -- who was old and very ill -- to be put to sleep, the dog has her eyes closed, her snout out the window and is simply taking it all in.

“It was my last 30 minutes with my dog that I basically grew up with so I wanted one last picture of her before I had to let go,” Kramer told The Huffington Post. “She looked so peaceful and happy.”

Kramer took the photo in 2013, but shared it to Reddit in November, after skimming through old photos and feeling sentimental. The 25-year-old had Libra since she was 8 years old, ABC News reported, but had to put her to sleep a couple years ago because of an inoperable tumor on her lung. Kramer hopes sharing the photo can help others cope with the difficulties of losing an animal.

“Owning a dog or any pet, for that matter, you have to accept that you will outlive them. It hurts, but you have to know when to let go,” Kramer told HuffPost. “This picture shows how beautiful she was, wrinkles and all, and 'smiling' until the very end. She was always so happy and loving, I think her face says it all.”
