Accidental Alert Warns California Of An Earthquake That Happened In 1925

An algorithmic error told Californians they’d be in for a major earthquake on Wednesday, but the earthquake had already happened ― in 1925.

The automatically generated report from the U.S. Geological Survey indicated that a magnitude 6.8 quake would occur in the Pacific Ocean 10 miles west of Santa Barbara.

As a frame of reference, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in 1989 killed 63 people and caused $6 billion of damage in California.

So what gives with this quake scare?

The quake did happen, but it happened in 1925,” Rafael Abreu, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Associated Press.

This should seem like good news, but the false alarm still sent shockwaves through social media. Many automated tweets, synced with the USGS alert system, were pushed out, sparking concern.

Additionally, people around the country began to scratch their heads as no one had reported feeling tremors ― something that most certainly would have happened in large numbers had an earthquake of that size actually come about.

Still, publications like the Los Angeles Times, which has automated emails from the USGS to aid in its coverage, ended up alerting the public about the fake quake and then had to rescind the messages.

The LA Times bot even generated an article about the fake quake:

So, how did the USGS casually send out an alert that confused even the LA Times?

Apparently false alarms are fairly common, though the AP says “they rarely report quakes so big or in such populated areas.”

Also, researchers from the California Institute of Technology were using new information to analyze the epicenter of the 1925 earthquake in the Santa Barbara Channel. That earthquake ― a real one ― leveled several buildings and killed many people. You can see the LA Times’ article from that quake below:

Even more intriguingly, the full quake report associated with Wednesday’s tweet listed the date as June 29, the same date as the 1925 quake, but indicated it would happen in the year 2025. So, yeah, that USGS report was all sorts of screwed up.

Let’s just hope they were wrong about any quakes in 2025 too.

Italian Airport Waives Restrictions On Traveling With Delicious Pesto

One airport in Italy is giving travelers the green light to carry pesto on board.

The Genoa airport’s “Il pesto è buono” — pesto is good — initiative waives the 100 milliliter restriction on liquids for visitors hoping to bring home a jar or two of the local delicacy.

In exchange for looking the other way on your international pesto smuggling operation, airport officials ask that travelers make a small donation to the Flying Angels, an organization that arranges travel abroad for sick children to receive treatment.

The airport’s verified Twitter account shared news of the program, complete with a basil-winged pesto jar ready for takeoff.

The idea was sparked thanks to the headache of confiscating hundreds of jars of pesto at airport security checks.

The BBC noted that passengers can take either one 500-gram jar or two 250-gram jars, and the pesto can only be Genovese.

Pesto is considered a local specialty of Genoa. The sauce is most typically made with olive oil, basil, cheese and pine nuts.

This Airline Lets You Pay A Little Extra For 'Neighbor-Free' Seats

Seatmate uncertainty is one of the most daunting parts of air travel. Who knows if you’ll be assigned a spot next to someone smelly and annoying, or nobody at all?!

Etihad Airways lets passengers guarantee the latter with “neighbor-free” seating in economy class, it announced this week. The program lets travelers pay extra to keep the seats surrounding theirs empty to secure some extra elbow room or even an entire row for lie-flat napping.

Here’s how it works: Before a flight, a passenger can place a bid online for one, two or three seats next to theirs, depending on the type of plane and how full it is. It’s not guaranteed they’ll score any extra space, according to Etihad, but they’ll receive a confirmation 32 hours before the flight. If the bid is accepted, the passenger pays for keeping the extra seat or seats empty and enjoys some bonus space. If not, they’re out of luck.

An Etihad spokesperson wouldn’t confirm how much “neighbor-free seats” are going for. There are minimum and maximum bidding amounts for each flight, according to the carrier’s website, but it doesn’t specify what those prices are.

“Neighbor-free” bidding is among moves the Abu Dhabi-based airline is making to generate more revenue streams in a difficult Middle East market, Bloomberg notes. Etihad flies into the U.S. through Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Dallas and Washington, D.C.

Indeed, airlines have found all sorts of creative ways to play with profits lately, like shrinking seats to fit more passengers and introducing “no frills” tickets that come at a cheaper upfront cost but tack on extra fees for necessities like checked bags.

This latest offer, however, has us intrigued. And ready for some elbow room.

Deadly Heat Waves Could Threaten 3 in 4 People By 2100

WASHINGTON — If humans fail to drastically cut carbon emissions, 3 in 4 people on the planet could be exposed to deadly heat waves by the end of the century, a new study has found.

And even if countries take action to reverse climate change with aggressive emissions reductions, up to 48 percent of the global population will be plagued by at least 20 days of lethal heat per year by 2100.

Camilo Mora, the study’s lead author and an associate professor of geography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told HuffPost that our “assault on the planet has been so massive” that we’ve left ourselves without a good option.

“When it comes down to heat waves, our choices right now are between bad and terrible,” Mora said. “Unfortunately, I wish there were better news ... This is already bad and it’s not going to get any better, but it could get a lot worse if we don’t do anything.”

And the problem isn’t just for the future. The threat is already here, with roughly 30 percent of the human population exposed to deadly conditions each year.

“We are talking thousands of people who have been killed by this,” Mora said. “People need to realize that this is the closest I know about the definition of torture. I don’t believe there is a worse way than to die by a heat wave. Imagine that.”

To complete the study, published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, Mora and 17 other researchers analyzed about 1,900 cases in which high temperatures killed people in dozens of cities worldwide since 1980. In doing so, the team worked out a threshold for when heat and humidity become lethal, which varies by location.

Since 1980, the number of lethal heat waves has been steadily rising, according to the team’s findings.

The study comes as extreme heat is scorching the U.S. Southwest. In Death Valley, California, the temperature is expected to climb to as high as 127 degrees. And in Phoenix, American Airlines canceled flights because temperatures were anticipated to reach 120 degrees — beyond the point that certain types of commercial aircraft can function.

Meteorologist Eric Holthaus tweeted that the average number of 100-degree days in Tucson, Arizona, has increased 55 percent in the last three decades.

Over the weekend in Portugal, at least 62 people died in a series of massive forest fires fueled by a heat wave on the Iberian Peninsula that brought temperatures as high as 104 degrees in some areas.

Extreme heat can lead to a number of dangerous and even fatal health conditions, including heat stroke and cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. Children, the elderly and low-income populations are most at risk. U.S. cities including St. Louis, Philadelphia and Chicago have seen “large increases in death rates during heat waves,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mora’s study highlighted deadly events like the 1995 heat wave in Chicago, which brought temperatures as high as 106 degrees and killed more than 700 people; a 2003 event in Paris, which resulted in nearly 5,000 deaths; and the 2010 heat wave in Moscow, when more than 10,000 people perished.

The threat that more people will die from such events “now seems almost inevitable, but will be greatly aggravated if greenhouse gases are not considerably reduced,” the study states.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced he will withdraw the U.S. from the historic Paris Agreement, an international accord aimed at cutting carbon emissions to ward off the worst effects of global climate change.

It’s a move that Mora summed up as “stupid.”

“The science of climate change is so solid that for him to pull out from from that agreement, knowing the consequences of that for humanity, is just the definition of what I find stupid,” he said. “I don’t mean any offense there.”

We can’t afford not to fix the problem, said Mora, who said he’s frustrated that people are willing to ignore climate change or treat it as a future threat. What gives him hope is the cities and states that have vowed to take action when Trump has refused to.

“We are assaulting our planet,” Mora said. “We are dumping all kinds of crap into the atmosphere. We are destroying ecosystems like it’s nobody’s business. How is it that we can expect anything good [to come] out of it?”

Phoenix Is So Hot That Some Planes Can't Take Off

American Airlines has canceled around 40 flights that were scheduled to take off from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday, as afternoon highs in the area are expected to exceed the operating temperatures of the company’s smaller aircraft.

The airline confirmed in a statement to HuffPost that its Bombardier CRJ, which it uses for regional “American Eagle” flights, can’t take off in weather hotter than 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Phoenix is projected to hit 120 degrees today.

The airline canceled seven flights on Monday for the same reason.

Should temps edge much higher, American would have to increase its number of cancellations. Its longer-range Boeing jets can’t fly in temperatures exceeding 126 degrees, and its Airbus jets are stuck at 127 degrees.

So far, no other airlines have canceled flights from the airport, according to Heather Lissner, the airport’s public information manager. Lissner said airlines have canceled flights due to the heat twice before: on July 1, 2013, and on June 26, 1990, when Phoenix set an all-time heat record of 122 degrees.

Heat affects planes because hot air expands until it isn’t dense enough for them to generate lift ― and without lift, we’re all grounded.

Patrick Smith, an airline pilot, blogger and the author of Cockpit Confidential, explained the phenomenon to Business Insider in 2013:

Hot air is less dense. This affects the output of the engines as well as aerodynamic capabilities, increasing the required runway distance and reducing climb performance. Therefore the amount of passengers and cargo a plane can carry are often restricted when temps are very high.

To state the obvious: That’s hot. Really hot. Or, as the Phoenix New Times puts it, the city is “a literal hellscape” and “an unlivable inferno.”

This article has been updated with comment from Lissner.

Canadian Hotel Wants To Get Its Hands On Whoever Stole Human Toe

A hotel in Canada’s Yukon Territory wants to conduct a manhunt for a person who stole a human toe.

Not just any toe, mind you. This is a toe that the Downtown Hotel in Dawson City uses in its signature drink, the Sourtoe Cocktail.

People come from all over the world to try the drink, which is basically a shot of whisky with a dehydrated toe in it.

A brief history can be seen in the video above.

There’s a rule about drinking this concoction: You can drink it fast or you can drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe.

The mummified toe went missing Saturday night, and hotel executives are stamping their feet.

“We are furious,” Terry Lee, the hotel’s “toe captain,” said, according to HuffPost Canada.

Lee suspects a man from Quebec in the toe theft. Earlier in the evening, the man allegedly bragged about possibly stealing the toe.

“This guy asked to do the toe after the 9-to-11 p.m. toe time hours, and one of the new staff served it to him to be nice,” Lee told The Vancouver Sun. “And this is how he pays her back. What a lowlife.”

That customer left behind the Sourtoe Cocktail certificate awarded by the hotel, so the police have his name.

The hotel plans to fine the thief $2,500 unless the toe is returned. It’s also offering a reward for anyone with information about the theft.

Lee said the hotel still has a couple of backup toes, but hotel manager Geri Coulbourne really liked the one that was stolen.

Coulbourne told the CBC that it was donated by a man who had to have it surgically removed, then it was cured in salt for six months.

“This was our new toe, and it was a really good one. We just started using it this weekend,” she said.

Flint Airport Evacuated After Police Officer Stabbed

A suspect has been taken into FBI custody after a police officer was stabbed Wednesday morning at Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan.

Lt. Jeff Neville of the Michigan State Police is in stable condition after undergoing surgery, an MSP spokeswoman told HuffPost. The on-duty officer was rushed to a local hospital after being stabbed in the neck and back, according to CNN.

The FBI said it believes the incident was isolated and that there is no threat to the Flint community.

The agency is leading the investigation and said it’s too early to determine the suspect’s motive. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is undergoing questioning, according to a statement issued by the agency.

“We are aware of reports that the attacker made statements immediately prior to or while attacking the officer, but it is too early to determine the nature of these alleged statements or whether or not this was an act of terrorism,” according to the FBI statement.

NBC News reported that the suspect is from Quebec, Canada.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) requested community members keep the attacked officer in their thoughts and prayers.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Baby Born on Indian Airline Given A Lifetime Of Free Travel

The sky’s the limit for a baby boy born on an Indian airline over the weekend, earning him free plane tickets for life.

Jet Airways announced the generous birthday present after its future jet-setter was delivered on one of their flights from Saudi Arabia to India on Sunday, CNN reported.

The baby boy’s mother was reportedly flying to the southwest Indian city of Kochi when she went into labor prematurely.

The flight was diverted to Mumbai where the mother and baby were transferred to a hospital. There, they are said to be doing well, the airline told the BBC in a statement.

“Jet Airways commends its crew for their response and promptness that saw them successfully translate their training into life-saving action,” the airline said.

In a social media post celebrating the baby’s arrival, Jet Airways shared a mock Father’s Day letter written by their newest passenger to his father. In it, the airline confirmed their gift of “a lifetime of free travel.”

“This means more travel is on the cards, more fun outings with you and mom, and more of exploring this beautiful world,” the letter reads.

This was the first time a baby was born on one of their planes, Jet said in a statement. But of course, it has happened before on other carriers: Earlier this year, a woman gave birth on a Turkish Airlines flight.

Although airlines gifting free travel to babies born on flights is known to happen ― as it has for this lucky Jet Airways baby ― there’s no truth to the rumor that such gifts are a general rule, as Snopes reports. Instead, it’s entirely up to an airline to make such a call.

Deaf Boy’s Meeting With Mickey And Minnie Is Pure Disney Magic

A little boy with a hearing impairment got the surprise of his young life recently during a trip to Disneyland when he had a character encounter in sign language.

Olive Crest, an organization that helps abused and at-risk children, posted footage online of the little boy approaching Pluto, Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse.

The, the Disney magic happened.

The organization said the boy’s sign language translator was standing just behind him, coaching Minnie and Mickey so they could greet the child in a way he would understand.

His reaction is priceless.

“Guys, this kid is the most incredible child I’ve ever met. He is mostly deaf, so the ASL translator is behind him, signing to the characters so they can copy her and communicate with the little guy,” the organization wrote. “He is not a big hugger, so that hug for Minnie is something special.”

Mickey and Minnie said “It’s nice to meet you” and “I love you,” according to Olive Crest.

KSEQ reports that the little boy is 2 and a half years old and from Chino, about 30 miles away from the Anaheim theme park. He has not been publicly named.

A similar moment happened recently at Walt Disney World in Florida, when a deaf toddler communicated in sign language with Mickey Mouse at a character meal.

Turbulence Injures At Least 26 On China Eastern Flight

At least 26 people were injured, four seriously, when turbulence struck a China Eastern Airlines plane en route from Europe, according to Chinese media reports.

Flight MU774 landed safely around 9 a.m. Sunday at Kunming Changshui International Airport in China’s Yunnan province after taking off in Paris, France over 11 hours earlier.

Some passengers suffered from broken bones and scalp lacerations after being hit with falling luggage or thrown from their seats during the incident, reported Chinese news agency Xinhua.

“I was on the flight, and I felt like I would not survive,” one passenger wrote on Weibo, a Chinese social media site, according to South China Morning Post. “Many people were injured, and among them, many had not buckled up.”

China Eastern Airlines posted on Weibo that passengers on the Airbus A330 had been provided relevant medical services and reminded customers to buckle their seat belts while flying.

The company did not specify how long or where the turbulence occurred on the flight. Skyteam, the airline alliance that includes China Eastern Airlines, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Passengers on another China Eastern flight had a scare last week when their plane suffered major engine failure shortly after take-off and had to make an emergency landing.

The plane, also an Airbus A330, was en route from Sydney to Shanghai when passengers and crew smelled something burning. Upon landing, emergency crews found a gaping hole in part of the engine’s casing.

No passengers or crew were injured.

Hawaiian Canoe Completes Three-Year Voyage Around The World

HONOLULU ― Three years after setting sail from Hawaii using only the stars, the wind and ancient Polynesian navigation techniques to voyage around the world, the Hokulea, a traditional double-hulled Hawaiian sailing canoe, has arrived back home on the island of Oahu.

Thousands of people welcomed the Hokulea as it docked in Magic Island in Honolulu early Saturday morning. Hawaiians greeted the canoe and its crew with traditional chants.

The homecoming, which marks the end of a difficult and meaningful voyage, was an emotional one for many. As the canoe approached land, a rainbow could be seen just off the horizon.

In 2014, navigators with the Polynesian Voyaging Society set sail on the Hokulea with one message: To inspire communities around the world to take care of “island Earth.” In its voyage, the Hokulea and her crew traveled more than 40,000 nautical miles, visiting 150 ports in 23 countries, including stops in South Africa, Brazil, Tahiti and New York City.

The Hokulea’s unique mission is a point of pride for the Aloha State.

Hawaii is one of the few states that has pushed back against the Trump administration’s policies on climate change. This month, Governor David Ige, a Democrat, signed a bill that binds the state of Hawaii to the goals made in the Paris climate accord, despite President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the country from the agreement. In 2015, Hawaii became the first state to enact a law requiring that 100 percent of its electricity come from renewable sources by 2045.

“Watching you on your epic voyage, you taught us that there is more than connects the world than divides us,” Ige said to the Hokulea crew during Saturday’s ceremony, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

See the residents of Hawaii welcome the Hokulea home in the photos below.
