Turns out, the Hawaiian island of Kauai has all the elements of an all-natural water park: cliffs for high diving, waves for surfing, tide pools for splashing, waterfalls for taking selfies, and -- perhaps best of all -- a lazy river for tubing.
With Kauai Backcountry Adventures, tubers ride in ATVs to access the historic "river," which is actually an irrigation canal, hand-dug 150 years ago to bring water to the Lihue Plantation from Mount Waiʻaleʻale.
Mount Waiʻaleʻale is one of the rainiest mountains in the world (averaging 450 inches of rain fall every year) and the waist-deep canal provides a slow-moving current that meanders through a two-and-a-half mile section of verdant forest.
The three-hour tour includes an hour in the water and is punctuated with several quick bursts of rapids and five intensely dark tunnels. It's billed as a family-friendly adventure, but the tunnels can be a little scary for kids.
While some reviewers say the $102-per-person admission is a little high, we think this is about as unique as it gets when it comes to tours of Hawaii. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride:
