Lava Remains Stalled Near Hawaii Shopping Center

PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — Lava that was creeping close to a shopping center on Hawaii's Big Island remains stalled about 700 yards from the complex.

The leading edge of the lava hasn't moved since Monday. But officials say there are slow-moving breakouts upslope that could eventually overtake the stalled front.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira says the upslope breakouts have been sluggish. He says the closest one moved just 50 yards from Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon. That active spout of molten rock is about 800 yards from the shopping center. It's about 100 to 150 yards wide.

Officials previously feared the lava could hit the shopping center around Christmas Day, but then the leading edge stopped.

Merchants are relieved that their businesses were spared for now.
